Simple Spring Refreshes

Simple Spring Refreshes

In many areas across the United States, spring has sprung! (Or will be springing soon!). The official first day of spring is this Thursday, March 20th. I don’t know about where you are, but here, in western New York State, the birds have signaled that know matter whether there is still snow on the ground or not, spring is upon us! The cheerful chirping of early morn has begun, the robins call out distinctively to one another and the bluebirds are flitting about as if in a Disney movie!

Soon, crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths will be poking up through the fresh earth and in the near future tulips will be in bloom! It’s always such a joy to experience these simple things after a long, cold winter.

It also tends to motivate me to make some changes to my home décor. While some years might involve a big project (like my garden re-do several years ago), mostly there are some simple things I like to do to freshen up my space.

Paint Exterior Door - Whether it’s your front door, breezeway door, or a side door used regularly, the entrance to your home is the first thing you, your family and guests will see. If it’s tired from wear and tear, a new coat of the same color paint will freshen it right up. If you’re feeling like a change is in order, pick a new color that reflects your home’s personality. The cost and time involved are minimal!

Curtains/Window Treatments - No need to go crazy, but every year or two I pick one room to change my curtains in. For example, do you want to brighten up your kitchen, or soften up the feel of the living room? Take inventory of colors and patterns already in the room (wallpaper or paint; florals, gingham, etc.) then search for complimentary curtains that will create the desired effect. If you’re good with a sewing machine, head to a textile store and custom make them!

Furniture Covers - Does your dark gray, brown or black sofa just seem too heavy during the spring and summer months? Or maybe the rich jacquard chair in jewel tones is a little overbearing for the lightness of spring. Check out the numerous options available now for chair, sofa, and loveseat covers. They are temporary so that if you want to go back to the original for the winter months, it’s easy to do and they are a quick, easy alternative to buying new furniture.

Styling your home for spring doesn’t have to be costly or time consuming and the results will have you singing with the spring birds!
