Holiday Ornaments...Make Your Own
OK, this is going way back to childhood; I’m talking those Christmas Cookie-type ornaments that you can bake and decorate yourself. This is a great project for those with children to entertain, or those who work with seniors, or those who like to bake, but don’t want to be tempted to eat the results!
What you’ll need:
Flour
Salt
Water
To make a dozen ornaments, you’ll want at least 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 1/2 cups of warm (not hot) water. Mix well and knead the dough and then roll it. You can create your own shapes or use cookie cutters to make snowflakes, hearts, ornaments and more. Bake at 300 degrees for approximately 30 minutes.
Immediately after removal from the oven, you may want to carefully create a hole with a toothpick at the top of the “cookie”. It should be large enough to fit a thin piece of ribbon or string through.
Allow the ornaments to cool thoroughly and then use poster paint, or another, thicker type of paint to create your own patterns and designs. Once the paint is completely dried, either brush on or spray with a clear polyurethane to seal the paint and Voila! You have your hand-made ornaments. Perfect for giving to friends and family, or decorate an entire tree with only your home-made ornaments for a nostalgic, themed look!
