New Year, New You!

New Year, New You!

It’s upon us once again, the New Year. 2022. And there are so many things to write about, but I discovered that January is National Hobby Month and it seemed an appropriate time to research some of the numerous hobbies that one could explore. Let’s face it, most of us consider the New Year to be a fresh start, the time to let go of any negativity from the past year and embrace new possibilities. So this is the perfect time to get started with one of those bucket list things you’ve always wanted to do.

Maybe you aren’t even sure what hobby you’d like to take up, but you just know you need to do something for yourself, to create new outlets for your energy and creativity. If that’s the case, we’ve compiled some options to help you get started.

Exercise/Movement

  • Join a gym: Many gyms and fitness facilities offer special membership rates at this time of year, not only does a gym help with your physical well-being, but it can be an opportunity for socializing as well.
  • Invest in equipment: Whether it’s a $30 hula hoop or a $2,000 Pelaton bike, determine what you will get the most use and enjoyment from and go for it!
  • Don’t spend any money at all, just add a relaxing walk or run to your daily routine.

Ancestry/Family Tree

  • Learning your own history can be fascinating. Gift yourself with a membership to a site such as ancestry.com or 23andme.com and begin to grow your family tree!

Collecting

  • Stamps
  • Coins
  • Figurines
  • Books
  • Antiques

The possibilities are endless with this hobby. Be sure you have an understanding of the cost involved in collecting the items you love, as well as space to put everything!

Reading

  • Join a book club; online or in-person
  • Get a library card
  • Invest in an eReader such as a Kindle or similar

Pets

  • Adopt a pet from a local shelter or humane society
  • Volunteer at a local shelter (what’s better than walking dogs and cuddling kitties?)
  • Organize pet food and supply drives to donate to your local shelter

This year can be filled with fun, laughter, new friends, goals met and more. If you’re looking for a new hobby, January is your month! Happy New Year everyone!
